Improving our Narrative Writing

Over the last couple of weeks, we have been busy refining our narrative writing skills by learning how to write sizzling starts, backfills and tension scenes. We worked collaboratively in pairs to plan and write a backfill for a given sizzling start. This was to help us develop our characters and setting in more detail.

We have also learnt how to ‘tighten tension’ in the climax of our story. In order to do this, we needed to use figurative language, adjectives and vivid verbs to create an exciting scene which makes our main character vulnerable. We watched snippets from two children’s movies (Honey! I Shrunk the Kids and Lemony Snicket: A Series of Unfortunate Events) and used them as a prompt for our tension scenes.

Stay tuned for some of our finished work!
