Graduation Morning Tea Roster

Hi everyone,

The Year 6 Graduation Morning Tea roster is now available outside our classroom.  If you, or your child, could name what item you will be bringing it would be greatly appreciated. Also, we would still love some more volunteers, mainly for service during the morning tea and the clean up afterwards. If you can assist, please let Tamara know. Her email is craig.tam@bigpond.com.

Thank you!

Leaver Shirts 2018

The Year 5 students, as a group, have decided on the concept and design of their Leaver shirts for 2018.  They have done a fabulous job with a very creative design.

Over the next two weeks, you will have an opportunity to come into the school to assist your child with selecting the correct shirt size and to place an order with the company who are making the shirts.  By sizing and ordering now, the shirts will be available to be purchased and worn by the students from the very start of 2018.

Please note that there will be fittings and a chance to place an order in Week 7 & 8 and then again at the beginning of the 2018.  The fitting session will start in the indicated classroom at 2.50 on the scheduled day until 3.30pm.  If you can’t attend the fitting session for your child’s class, please attend one of the other days with another Year 5 class.  Just let the person know what Room Number your child is in.

The shirts will cost $34 but NO payment is necessary until the commencement of the 2018 school year.  The shirt/s will need to be paid for before they can be picked up. More information will be provided closer to the time regarding the arrangements for the start of the year.

2018 Year 6 students.

Dear Year 5 families,

Next year is a very special year for you, your child and for us with them.

Your child is part of a very special group of students in our school’s short history. They are our Foundation Kindy group, the very first group of students who began in our first year as kindergarten students and who have come through eight years to be graduating at the end of 2018.  Like us, I am sure you are looking forward to making their graduation memorable for all the right reasons!

They are also special in that they are the largest group of Year 6s to ever graduate from Aubin Grove with an estimated number of 145, compared to this year’s group of 99. With such a large cohort of students heading into their final year of school, we believe it is vital that we start the planning now and so we would like to commence their transition to Year 6 this term.

The size of the cohort will significantly impact on many areas of the Year 6’s final year including the choice of venue for their Graduation Dinner Dance and the choice of their Big Week Out activities.  It will require being proactive in securing venues very early on.

As you may know, parents of the Year 6s undertake the organizing of the graduation Dinner Dance while the school takes responsibility for the graduation ceremony and the Big Week Out.

In conjunction with the P & C, the parents group organizes the Dinner Dance and any fundraising activities they decide upon to reduce costs to parents for the Dinner Dance and the Big Week Out.

In order to get this going, we would like to call a meeting for Year 5 parents next Tuesday night, 14th November, at 7pm in the library to identify who will be involved and commence the committee work that is required.

On another note, our current Year 6’s Graduation Ceremony will be held on Friday 8th December at 9.00am in the undercover area.  The Graduation Ceremony at Aubin Grove Primary is a very special occasion for the Year Six students at our school.

One aspect of the ceremony is having a celebration morning tea for the graduating students and their families after the graduation formalities.  A lovely tradition, we commenced in our first year, was to have the Year 5 families organise and provide the morning tea for the graduating students and families. This gesture will be reciprocated, the following year, to your Year Six child by next year’s Year 5 families.  This tradition encompasses everything we love about the Aubin Grove community spirit.

Usually, one of our Year 5 parents, or a small group of parents, volunteer to coordinate the organisation of the morning tea for the Year 6 students and their families.  All Year 5 families then assist with the food and help to serve the morning tea on the day. If you are willing to be the main coordinator or to be a part of the small organising group, can you please let your child’s teacher or myself know as soon as possible?   Michelle O’Sullivan was the coordinator last year and she will be more than happy to meet to pass on any advice to the coordinator/s for this year. More information will be made available within the next few weeks regarding the provision of home cooked food and assisting on the day.

We look forward to seeing many of you next Tuesday night to commence the committee work that will enable your child to have a very memorable final year at Aubin Grove Primary as a student leader.

Kind regards

Frank Pansini

Election of Year 5 Student Leaders

As you would be aware, all of our Year 5 students will become Student Leaders in 2018. We believe all of our children have the ability to step up into a leadership role to complete important, responsible tasks around the school. To prepare them for this, we conduct a Leadership Program that commences at the end of this year and continues in the first few weeks of 2018.

To this end, a Year 5 student leadership day will be held on Monday 20th November to investigate what leadership means, what is expected of our leaders and what makes a good leader. Students will collaboratively create a leader’s pledge that they will abide by in their final year. We will also conduct a Public Speaking session on this day so students know how to construct a great speech and how to effectively deliver it.

As stated before, at Aubin Grove, all Year 6 students are leaders. We do, however, elect a Head Boy and Head Girl plus 16 Faction Captains (2 boys and 2 girls for the four factions) to undertake specialist roles.

All students can self nominate for Head Boy/Girl and Faction Leader positions on Tuesday 21stNovember. After the Leadership Day, students will have a greater capacity to individually reflect on how well they meet the expectations of a leader at Aubin Grove and whether they have the desire and confidence to deliver a speech to the Year 5 and Year 6 student cohort.

Once we have the self-nominated list of the Year 5 students wishing to be Head Boy / Head Girl, theYear 5 students vote to select their top 10 nominees for the Head Boy/Girl positions. They will use their understanding of leadership to select the 10 boys and 10 girls who they feel best encapsulate this. Following the collation of the top rated 10 boys and 10 girls; these selected students are then invited to prepare a 2-minute speech to present to their Year 5 and 6 peers. They are also asked to answer an impromptu question on the speech day.

Head Boy and Head Girl speeches will be delivered to all Year 5 & 6 students on Wednesday 29thNovember in the undercover area after recess.  This is only for students and associated staff. Parents do NOT attend this session.

Preferential voting is conducted immediately after the speeches to determine the Head Boy and Head Girl. Staff (who have working knowledge of the students ie Specialist teachers) and Year 5 and 6 students cast a vote.

The election of Faction Captains follows the same process except those who nominate themselves present their speeches only to their own factions. We elect two girls and two boys per faction. These speeches will take place on Friday 1st December after lunch.

Students can self nominate for both Head Boy/Head Girl and Faction Captain positions.

The results of the elections are made known to all students who made speeches, by Mr Pansini and Mrs Smith before the night of the announcement at the End of Year Concert.  These students are brought together, in private, and sensitively informed of the outcome.  This is done so disappointed students have the chance to work through any feelings they have in private rather than in the presence of the whole school community.

Room 35 Class Assembly: Tuesday the 7th of November at 1:15 pm.

Our Class Assembly will be held in Week 5 on Tuesday the the 7th of November. It will start at 1.15pm. The kids are very excited and preparation for the day is currently in full swing. Before the day gets any closer I thought I should let you know what their costume idea’s are – I understand the additional pressures class assembly costumes can add to your weekly routine!

The script has been entirely written by the students and they have decided on three main character groups : News Reporters, Surfers and Fraction Monsters.

If it is possible it would be terrific if the Surfers could dress in beach clothes – like board shorts, rash vests and thongs. Wetsuits are fine and so are sunglasses.

The News Reporters have decided they would like to wear more formal and less colourful attire to reflect their role. They have suggest perhaps they could all wear a pair of glasses too.

The Fraction Monsters have decided they would like to let their imaginations run wild and wear really bold and colourful outfits. A monster is a very loose costume outline so they all have different idea’s they would like to run with for this one!

If you have any queries about this any of these roles or costumes please email me, or drop into school and we can have a chat.

Thanks for your ongoing support. I look forward to seeing you there!

The Year 5 cohort has decided to run a ‘book cafe’ where students will be asked to bring to school a book review of their favourite book.

Students will dress up as their favourite character from the book that that they have selected to review, which will be a title they have selected. Our book cafe will be on Thursday 21st September, between recess and lunch, with the book week dress up on Friday the 22nd of September.
