Our Japanese Language program endeavours to provide students with essential communication skills, intercultural capabilities and an understanding of the role of language and culture in human communication. At Aubin Grove Primary School, our students begin their Japanese language learning journey in Pre-Primary and continue to develop language and cultural understanding through to Year 6.

We engage students in an enjoyable and varied Japanese program so that learning a second language is both fun and rewarding. We cover a variety of topics throughout the year, making sure that each year builds upon the last, increasing the opportunity for scaffolding. Students begin with basic greetings, numbers and colours and build to noun, adjective and verb sentences based on real-life topics.

In Japanese we make the most of technology to help us learn in Hiragana script while still making learning accessible to all students. Students use iPads as an amazing tool to enrich and deepen their language learning processes. Students broaden their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills both independently and collaboratively, and leave proud of their achievements.

In addition to our in-class programs, authentic experiences are also provided through our Japanese Cultural Exchange Program. Families are offered the opportunity to host a student from Japan for a short cultural exchange which is a rewarding experience for all involved and those not hosting enjoy having the students in our school.

“Learning a new language opens doors to different views globally. It’s not just about the words; it helps you understand people better and even deepen your understanding of your own language more.” – Unknown
