Tournament of Minds (TOM) Winners!

Aubin Grove won its first international award when our amazing seven TOM students, representing Western Australia, were announced as winners of the Australasia Pacific TOM Titles on the Gold Coast recently. Competing in the Language Literature category, our students were up against the best teams from every Australian state and territory as well as teams from New Zealand and Thailand.  And they did Aubin Grove and WA proud! In fact, Aubin Grove was the only WA government school to win a category.

Congratulations to our team consisting of Ella S and Owen B (Year 4), Tim T, Jasmine D and Sofia M (Year 5) and Yanna de G and Hannah M (Year 6). They were superbly trained by Mrs Smith in the weeks leading up to the big event which enabled them to perform so well on the day when they weren’t allowed any outside help at all.

The students were locked away for three hours during which time they had to solve a complex problem that required them to come up with an  explanation for the origin of a myth or legend they had to select from a list they were given, how the characters from the story were involved in its creation and what symbolic meaning the myth or legend had in society. Whilst they were preparing this, they had to solve a separate spontaneous problem and then present the first challenge in a staged production to an audience at Griffith University. Daunting to say the least!

Well done to all students and Mrs Smith on a wonderful achievement. We are very proud of you all.
